Nvidia DLSS 5 Explained:
The Controversy Tearing the PC Gaming World Apart

📅 March 28, 2026✍️ PoGamer StaffCONTROVERSIAL

Nvidia unveiled DLSS 5 at GTC 2026 on March 16 — and the reaction from gamers and developers alike was swift, angry, and almost unanimous. Here’s what’s happening, what DLSS 5 actually does, and why Jensen Huang says everyone is “completely wrong.”

What Is DLSS 5?

Unlike previous DLSS versions which upscaled resolution and generated frames to boost performance, DLSS 5 introduces “neural rendering” — using generative AI to alter a game’s lighting, materials, and character visuals in real time. Nvidia calls it adding “photoreal lighting and materials.” Critics call it “the yassify filter for games.”

Demo footage showed DLSS 5 applied to Resident Evil Requiem, Starfield, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Hogwarts Legacy — with characters appearing smoother, shinier, and in many cases drastically altered from the original art direction.

Why Gamers and Devs Are Furious

Art direction altered: Critics say DLSS 5 “corrects” intentional atmospheric choices — scrubbing fog, brightening dark horror corridors, smoothing stylized textures.
Devs blindsided: Artists at Ubisoft and Capcom reportedly found out about the DLSS 5 demos at the same time as the public.
Boycott call: New Blood CEO Dave Oshry publicly called for a Nvidia boycott, comparing DLSS 5 to NFTs and loot boxes.
“Homogenisation” fear: Developers warn all games will start looking the same under DLSS 5’s AI pass.
Jensen Huang’s response: At a Tom’s Hardware press Q&A, Huang said critics are “completely wrong” — insisting developers have “full, detailed artistic control” via intensity, colour grading, and masking settings in the SDK. He called it “content-control generative AI” not a filter.

The Twist

A later email interview revealed DLSS 5 isn’t actually operating at the 3D geometry level as Nvidia initially implied — it’s a high-end 2D post-processing pass applied over rendered frames. Bethesda and Epic both weighed in: Bethesda said it will be “totally optional for players,” while an Epic lead producer called the negative reaction “absolutely insane.”

Hardware note: DLSS 5 launches this Fall and is currently RTX 50-series only. RTX 40-series may get a lighter version. RTX 30 and older: nothing.
⚡ POGAMER VERDICT

DLSS 5 is the most divisive GPU feature since DLSS 1.0. The technology has potential — but the rollout was a PR disaster. Surprising developers, altering artistic intent, and calling critics “completely wrong” is not a winning strategy. We’ll reserve full judgment until it ships in actual games this fall.
