With a size of 94.5mm and 134.7mm and 38.7mm, the case is small (smaller than the Playstation Classic’s 105mm the size of 149x33mm); however, it can accommodate an extremely robust Raspberry Pi 4 and the USB socket and safe shutdown buttons which redirects two of the four USB sockets to the front of the case so that you can connect to your USB controllers easily.
The installation on the Pi4 is easy enough using a magnetic screwdriver. You can build it with only handling in just 15 minutes. There are no snags or points of pressure to worry yourself about while assembling the case.
The power, reset as well as the open button are functioning and are displayed the same way that you’ve always remembered them, using nearly identical fonts and colors. The classic CD-circular lid opens open with the same fervor and features the tiny 8 dot grip feature on the front right that you can slide your finger across and then snap it back closed.
The side vents are modern and stylish and are a stunning nostalgia item to feel in your hand. The vents also conceal the secret panel that lifts off on the left that houses the USB and LAN sockets. The bottom of two feet on the left holds the micro SD slot. It gives straightforward, no-nonsense access without the need to remove everything.
The ports for controllers on the front can be seen, as are the faux details for the memory card slot. The USB card is mounted upside down, so the plugging in of the already A-symmetrical USB cable feels a bit off. The details on the memory card could be used to house the memory card.
There’s maybe a spring-loaded microSD slot that feels as if you’re using the memory socket to store memory; however, it could be an issue with space and adaptability within the limits of the unit’s complex internal design. Unfortunately, there’s no way to flip the board to mount it the right way, which is very unfortunate since this would have fixed this small niggle precisely.
Closing and opening the lid doesn’t seem to serve any reason, even though it allows for ventilation as well as the dump bin to store any different SD memory cards. However, it seems like an added feature, and I’m not keen to keep the lid closed during play to avoid overheating. It’s similar to driving with the (hood) opened to provide the vehicle with some cooling while you drive.
It will obviously hinder your vision and also reduce the vision on your LCD screen when it’s in use. It’s an odd design over functionality sacrifice in the overall layout, which might have been handled better given that there’s not much space between the Pi4 and the other internals for a conventional cooling solution. However, it is possible to attach a tiny fan to the grill and heatsinks if you’d like to.
The Retroflag PiStation LCD screen is attached to the back of the console using two flathead screws. Within just a few seconds, it transforms one of the two micro-HDMI sockets into a more comfortable, full-sized HDMI socket that allows TV/Monitor connection as well as an interface to the USB-C power socket.

It’s an ideal match in terms of semi-portability,
and it’s important to note the usage of the term “semi” since the device still requires power from a cable to function, even if you’re not using it on your television or monitor. When I used it on my TV, I saw the resolution of my Samsung TV stated that it outputs at 720p using the full-sized HDMI cable.
However, when you take it out from the display and then output using micro HDMI, it will output 1080p at full resolution in accordance with the device information on my TV. I’m wondering whether it’s an external splitter that is used in lieu of a direct pass-through. Its output’s resolution matches the same as the LCD screen it’s running through, and not the resolution that can be output by the RPI 4 itself is capable of putting out.
The screen is tiny, but it is perfectly formed thanks to its 4.3″ diagonal that displays crisp, sharp images with almost zero ghosting. Maybe a redesign in the near future of this screen using OLED and an edge to display could produce an even greater plus much more comfortable 5.5″ display that could be an upgrade from the screen that is currently in use.
Power is required to operate, which makes you a bit limited, and the utilization for an inside-car DC converter or being able to access the mains energy source is all that’s required to keep you entertained while traveling, or maybe when you are short on space or not having access to a TV. Be aware that a 3 amp 15 watts power source is recommended, especially when you’re using USB controllers, which draw a lot of energy (RGB lit or any of the other types); however, you can choose to use Bluetooth controllers as well.
The buttons at the front of the screen control the speaker’s sound levels +and – between 0 and 100%, an aspect ratio switch, ranging between 16:9 and 4/3, and screen brightness levels plus/minus from zero to 100 percent.
The brightness setting at about 75% was the most effective alternative to burning the retina. However, at night, you can lower the brightness without difficulty. Although somewhat tinny sound quality from the speakers because of the absence of a subwoofer, sounds pleasantly satisfying and will make you feel energized in the game of your choice.
Headphones jacks on the back that allows you to connect your headset, too. I didn’t hear any crackling or distortion through all of my tests. I was worried this could occur; however, to my delight, it was a great sound, even at loud volumes.
Initially, I had set it up using Recalbox 8; however, I experienced some oddities, which meant I could not start the device after shutting it off. Even using secure shutdown programs in place and all the buttons working perfectly, the image did not cooperate.
Hence, I changed the memory card from a 128GB model along with the OS images changed to Batocera one, which I experienced greater satisfaction with. I’m not convinced that this was in any way an issue with the device. I believe it’s an RPI4 hardware problem with the software and not related to the buttons on the case or the scripts.
Once the device was set up and loaded, I had an absolute pleasure emulating not just PS1 games with this device but as well MAME, Amstrad, Atomiswave, and Naomi titles with this impressive setup. I decided to connect two of my fight-stick Alphas PiStation, which was a joy to play games such as Dolphin Blue and Street Fighter Mix, along with other arcade games from the convenience of my living room and huddled around the screen.
This design, when paired with a 4GB version of the Pi 4B, with Broadcom BCM2711 Quad-core Cortex A72, 64-bit ARM V8, 64-bit SoC with a clock speed of 1.5GHz, is a device that PlayStation Classic owners could barely imagine, even including an LCD thrown to the package, at a fraction more than the typical day-one cost of the official version of the device. As of the writing time, a four-GB Pi 4 with this $89.99 case and screen will cost you approximately $160. However, keep in mind the power this device has compared to the limited options available at the time.
I’m a huge admirer of this case due to the authenticity and quality provided by Retroflag. They know the ropes in terms of creating cases for existing unmodified Raspberry Pi devices. If you’ve ever had a doubt, then ease those worries and realize that this is among the easiest to put together simple solutions for retro gaming requirements.
