Doom Eternal review: Playing the new Doom is pretty much an intense workout. True, bikes like Doomguy won’t grow to anyone in front of the monitor, but frenetic action will pump your body down and won’t let you sleep. Literally.
Recovering health, cover mechanics, vehicles, QTE, stealth passages, two-weapon limitations, reloading cartridge. This and most other 21st-century shooter fictions throw a big hell out of id Software.
Just as the first-person shooter genre did at the Doom restart in 2016, they now focus on a purebred action designed according to the motto.
“You can rest in the grave, send demons to the grave until then.” bigger, nicer and better in virtually every way.

Doom Eternal Release date
Doom Eternal will release on March 20, 2020. Take a look at the Doom Eternal to unlock period for your region. Originally, Doom Eternal was intended for a launch in November of 2019. Nevertheless, in October, Only a month before it was established to launch, id Software announced it could be delayed until March 20, 2020
What does not go by force, it goes by force
As you play, you will notice that there is a demonic invasion on Earth, that there is another evil race beyond the demons, and that Doomguy can even tell a witty story full of unexpected twists (“Must kill them all!”).
However, developers and players know very well that the whole game is a bloody comedy full of forums and satire and that no one needs any story excuse. All you need is a shotgun.
The intro movie takes two minutes, the progressive heavy-metal music is finished with the legendary satisfying “pump” click, and as soon as you gain control, the shotguns shatter the zombies’ blood to all directions.
Here’s the ammunition for all the miserliness who might claim that Doom Eternal doesn’t bring anything revolutionary new. You play straight with the shotgun from the first second! And a few minutes later, you already have the motor! It hasn’t been here yet.
Singleplayer gift from hell
Heavens have been coughing for lovers of straight single-player shooter games for a long time (honour to the exceptions), so fans had to turn their plea to Texas software miserable id software.
The result is a campaign that took nearly 30 hours, which is remarkable for two reasons.
First, when was the last time you played this long shooter? And secondly, even at the end, it did not seem to me that Doom Eternal was running out of breath.
On the contrary, we were talking royally to the last minute and immediately after watching the headlines, we started the campaign again, on Nightmare and cheats. IDDQD, IDKFA… but you know it. Fun must be.
Doom Eternal is a surprisingly great game and an hour; it took me two to finally get pulled down.
While the last Doom clung to his clutches immediately, Eternal had a slower start. In the beginning, there are tutorials for old and new RPGs that you have to get acquainted with, but in the long run, they are the ones that keep the gameplay fresh to the end.
You know all eight weapons from the past, and you can enrich each quarry with two different modifications and upgrade those modifications several times.
Some will be used more often (chaingun energy shield does wonder), others less (automatic shotgun just wastes ammunition).
To do this you have to learn to use double jumps, dodges, runes, armour upgrades, blood punch, explosive grenade, freezing grenade, flamethrower, chainsaw and last but not least glory kills, now iconic finishing blows.
Now, reread the previous paragraph… there is little to a seemingly “dull thoughtless” shooter, is it? It is not in vain that the duelling system in Doom is referred to as chess.
You are a one-headed army, but you have different attack modes as a whole army of 16 pieces.
Os propos, glory kills! They can be counted on dozens of species, they are lightning-fast, functional, grotesquely brutal, divinely satisfying, and have never been eaten by me all the time.
When you shoot down the demon enough, it falls into a vulnerable state for a few seconds, flashes and asks for a blow from the past.
Terminators are contextual, and their design varies depending on whether you come from behind, from the side, on the wall, or even from the air (you will spend a lot of time in the air in Doom Eternal).
Hell Knight slammed skull. Whiplash’s throat pierced by his humerus. The torn eye of Cacodémon. Arachnotron devouring his grenade … give it a week, and YouTube will be full of bloody compilations.
It should be emphasized that glory kills are not just for effect. To date, we’re excited about how developers have handled health, armour and ammunition management.
Sure, stocks can be rolled over the ground everywhere, but if you don’t play at the lowest difficulty, they won’t be enough. At that moment, glory kills come into play. And not just them!
Tear up the demonic soldier’s rib cage and lose health. Light Mancuba with a flame-thrower and begin to pour armour from it. Unleash the Impa with a motorcycle and a lot of ammunition will come out.
Weak enemies are your friends because you can paradise them and from any skirmish paradoxically climb in a better condition than you embarked on. And that’s something that makes Doom Eternal unique across the genre.
Doomguy, the nightmare of all demons
It is only in the second half of the game that the real fun begins, that is why the enthusiastic verdict shines upstairs.
Only in the second half, you become Roman Šebrle, a universal decathlete among the horsemen of the apocalypse, who already know what demon pays what and who can effectively use all his skills.
At first, you will feel a bit overwhelmed, but the progress of the game is satisfactory, and every weapon and skill has its place. Especially on a greater difficulty, the game uncompromisingly forces you to use everything you have at hand.
Compared to today’s trends, the authors hardened and our favourite difficulty setting on Ultra-Violence kicked us in the second level.
The reason was mainly the fact that from the beginning to the end of the game, despite the gradual upgrade, we always struggled with lack of ammunition. One thing to say: thank God!
It is an artistic intention by which authors continuously force you to change the arsenal and discover some of its hidden abilities.
For example, the new double-barreled shotgun firing hook to attract the enemy in a flash was only included in our repertoire in the last third (by the way, by Doom Eternal, the double-barreled gun is one of the funniest weapons ever shooter players could touch).
It was a mistake if we hooked the hook early, we would make life easier.
But that’s exactly what it is. We ran out of a spinner, a rocket launcher, plasma jeans and a motorbike, only shotguns in hand, we needed to fight at a distance. Blood. From floor to ceiling.
When it rains hell
Doom Eternal can finally afford to be a big game. While last time the creators have invested considerable resources in the construction of high-quality fundamental pillars, this time, they had the foundation ready and could build more effectively. Literally.
The levels in the new Doom are pompous. Whether you are on Earth, on Mars, in hell, gothic cathedrals, on a frozen surface, or in a futuristic universe, you see huge panoramas around you and feel like an ant (which will eventually eat it all from within).
Leaving aside the slightly sterile earth levels, which consist of hundreds of times seen broken skyscrapers and office buildings, there is always something to admire and admire.
When your neck hurts. More resources were pumped into the game than last time, and the variability of the environment is immediately visible.
Paradoxically, the controversial novelty in the form of more frequent jumping and platform stages was quite suitable for us.
Finding a way in megalomaniacal epic cathedrals and inventing smaller puzzles evokes the Darksiders, which sounds a bit inappropriate on paper, but know that the result is a pleasant change of pace, rest and silence before the inevitable storm.
Doom Eternal very skillfully mixes small skirmishes, large arenas, exploratory parts and some extra challenge here and there, keeping it fresh until the final boss fight. And as is customary in this series, levels are full of hide-and-seek.
Some hide statuettes and turntables that you can use to make your space station cosy, where you return to relax after most missions.
Others offer resources to permanently upgrade health, armour, or skills that are critical to survival on a higher difficulty.
The levels are extensive, and you spend from one to three hours in each. In our case, this was significantly influenced by the effort to plunder everything adorable; some easter eggs were difficult to find for ten minutes, even though according to the map they sat in the room behind the wall right next to it.
Fortunately, the authors came up with a beneficial step in the form of fast travel, which you activate at the end of each level and allows you to go through all its nooks before you complete the mission and before the classic Doom bum bum bum jumps up at the end of the level.
Firm in reins
Doom Eternal is an awful but really awesome game. Years ago, people calculated that Doomguy was moving at 80 km / h, and we’re still talking about just running.
Add to it dodges, double jumps, swings on the bar or acceleration to glory kill and suddenly you feel like a spell of lightning, a natural disaster that hit the world of poor demons.
in this Doom eternal review, we know that Speed is the primary design pillar of the game. The entire combat system is based on constant movement. Stop for a few seconds, and you’re KO.
Artificial intelligence is hugely aggressive and pushes you like New Zealand rugby players.
Conversely, almost all enemy projectiles – missiles, fireballs, laser missiles, and others – deliberately fly relatively slowly to give you a chance to dance efficiently among them, making them feel more like demigods.
You know these mechanics from the original Doom, but you do not know it from today’s flood of pseudo-realistic military shooters. It’s all fun here.
Speaking of speed, we are returning to a unique way of managing health, armour, and ammunition from the enemy’s bodies.
To stay alive, Doomguy must fight, and to fight effectively; it must move. The arenas are perfectly adapted; they do not have dead ends, they are littered with trampolines, trapezes, teleports and sometimes even cleverly hidden boosts (berserk, can you not?).
A furious shooter can’t work without precise control, and even this id Software has made it one. Running, jumping, shooting, using abilities and switching arsenals works flawlessly, and your virtual self does exactly what you want from the armchair in front of the monitor.
We wouldn’t be afraid of control in the genre of Titanfall.
Every once in a while we are stuck on a strange curb on the road. Otherwise, all deaths are attributed to art, not to uncontrolled control.
Fortunately, the occasional crashes during the hopping passages are not penalized in any draconian way – you will lose a bit of health and immediately appear a step back. You can do that.
From a technical point of view, Doom Eternal is an excellent smeared shinkansen that whistles without major strokes and is a pleasure to look at (if you don’t stop and start to examine some of the fuzzy textures, the previous part made compromises).
Smooth images are key to the ultimate experience, while the slightly above-average GTX 1660 Ti 6GB has managed Doom’s FullHD for the second-highest detail.
We only noticed a single small stroke in the BFG shots, when the screen glows, and all demons insight suddenly explode.
And bugs? Just once during a harsh firefight, we had a remarkable death, after which we found ourselves at the checkpoint behind this firefight.
Which, of course, we perceived as severe damage to honour and demanded satisfaction – Doomguy does not run from the fight!
In conclusion, we would like to make one personal recommendation regarding technical processing and control. Although we’ve always been a cross-platform gamer and have fired tons of lead on the consoles with the gamepad, Doom Eternal is a game that works correctly only on a computer with an excellent keyboard, mouse, pad and headphones.
Every fraction of a second decides, and you only unleash the right demonic ballet when you have things firmly in your hands.
Which is simply not possible on the gamepad couch. Doom Eternal is a great frenetic cut regardless of the platform, but most shines on the PC.
And what then?
Even if Doom Eternal had nothing but a one-time 20-30 hour story campaign, we would be most satisfied.
However, the authors have also added cheats to diversify the gameplay, and have also prepared so-called Master Levels.
These are slightly adjusted levels from the campaign, in which about three times the number of monsters from the later stages of the game has settled.
Master Levels are explicitly intended as an end game only when you have collected all weapons, tested all skills and touched all old and new monsters.
As soon as Marauder, a new hell warrior with a shield, an ax, and a double-barreled shotgun, is up against you, all the fun ends.
Although we consider ourselves to be an advanced doom is, this scumbag sometimes flooded us at the very end of the game.
He is invulnerable almost all the time, and your head is cutting your head, and only when he reaches out and his eyes flash green, and you have a shotgun shot.
When we met him for the first time, it cost us all five extra lives, which we have been carefully fooling for worse times. Well, Marauder just this worse time is …
If you were looking above all for an honest, furious, tuned and content-packed old-school single-player shooter, there’s no need to look further.
