Reported October 20, 2026 · Nintendo gaming news
The Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2 demo is available now, giving Nintendo players a free way to try the opening adventure before the full game arrives on December 4. Capcom confirms that demo progress carries into the full release, and nearby players can hunt together through local wireless play.

The demo details that matter
| Question | Confirmed answer |
|---|---|

The demo’s availability and limits come from Capcom’s October 20 media announcement. This is the Switch 2 rollout; the free opening demo already existed on other platforms.
How to find and download the Switch 2 demo
- Open Nintendo eShop on your Switch 2 and search for Monster Hunter Wilds.
- Choose the Switch 2 listing and select its demo download option. Use the official Nintendo listing to confirm the title and platform.
- Check the storage space shown for the demo, allow the download to finish, then launch it from the HOME Menu.
Nintendo also maintains an official roundup of free demos. If you are browsing several games, check each listing’s system label before downloading: the catalog includes both original Switch software and Switch 2 releases.
What you can play, and what happens to your save
The opening includes the Hunter and Palico character creator, early story scenes, and hunts in the Windward Plains. Capcom says all demo progress carries forward, so time spent making your character and learning the opening does not have to become a throwaway session.
Keep that demo save intact if you intend to continue in December. The confirmed carryover is from this demo into the full Switch 2 release; it should not be read as a promise that an existing PC or console campaign can move between platforms.
Local co-op is available; online play comes with the full game
For the demo, multiplayer uses nearby Switch 2 systems through local wireless. Its offline-only limitation means this is not a way to join a friend over the internet. Agree on where you will play together before arranging a group session.

What Nintendo confirms about the December release
Nintendo’s full-game listing gives December 4 as the release date and lists one player on a single system, plus one to four players over local wireless or online. It also lists TV, tabletop, and handheld modes. Those are full-product features; the demo’s separate multiplayer limits still apply.
For newcomers, the publisher’s overview describes a hunter expedition into the Forbidden Lands after a boy named Nata escapes a mysterious monster. Changing weather alters the environments, and hunting supplies materials for forging weapons and armor. That is the broader progression loop the opening introduces.
Make the free trial answer your buying questions
- Spend time with the combat and menus after finishing character creation.
- Try the screen setup you actually expect to use, including handheld play if that is your main reason for choosing Switch 2.
- Pay attention to how readable the action feels and whether the controls suit you. A launch trailer cannot settle those preferences for your own setup.
