Valve’s new filters make a big difference

In its October 19 announcement, Valve says this edition adds browsing by genre, theme, feature, and subcategory. That gives you a more useful starting point than scrolling through every tile: choose the type of game or experience you want first, then narrow the results.

For example, start with the kind of session you have time for tonight. A puzzle adventure, a run-based strategy game, and a physics sandbox ask for different things from a player. Filtering before downloading helps you build a shortlist that fits your mood.

Three confirmed free demos to check

These examples are drawn from publisher listings, rather than a hands-on ranking. Each offers a different reason to use the festival.

Hela: of Mice & Magic

Hela’s Steam page offers a downloadable demo for its mouse-sized adventure. The wider game emphasizes exploration, puzzles, and landscapes inspired by Northern Sweden. Its official developer updates describe the demo as a self-contained adventure involving a witch’s protective magic and a Froggy backpack.

GrimKeep

The GrimKeep demo is a dark fairy-tale roguelite built around dice and item combinations. Its publisher describes tuning a dice bag, triggering bonuses and multipliers, and using defense, stuns, and healing to survive. It is a useful alternative if you prefer planning builds to exploring a large 3D world.

MOLTYN

The MOLTYN demo focuses on a volcanic island and destructible materials. Its listing includes five story missions plus an island sandbox without a timer or fail state. Lava, water, rock, and buildings interact as physical material, making this the experimental sandbox option in the shortlist.

How to download a Next Fest demo

  1. Open the festival page in Steam and select a game that interests you.
  2. On its store page, find Download Demo or the separate demo listing’s Install Demo button.
  3. Check the demo’s own system requirements and storage needs, then install it through the Steam client.
  4. After playing, wishlist the full game if you want to follow its release.

Treat the festival deadline as your planning deadline. Individual developers control their demos, so check their updates rather than assuming a download will remain available indefinitely. For Steam Deck or VR, also check the specific demo’s platform and hardware requirements.
